Neighborhood Bike Rodeo
Help your group's or neighborhood's kids learn practical skills in handling their bikes — starting, stopping, riding in a straight line while scanning and signaling — and operating their bike like a vehicle in a controlled (off-street) traffic simulation.
You provide the venue, volunteers and tables/chairs/shade/refreshments/restroom facilities, and we can provide a nationally-certified instructor to lay out the skills courses, oversee the event, and conduct the training.
Knowledgeable Instructors
Teaching the right skills in the right way, and in a safe manner is key to a successful event.
Led by League Cycling Instructors, these sessions can help you and your volunteers teach bicycle safety skills and drills for kids. (Alternately, your staff, members or volunteers can take our Youth Instructor Training which will allow them to put on the training themselves. See below for details.)
The Austin Cycling Association provides $200 toward the instructor fees. The fee for one instructor for a two- to three-hour event is $350, leaving only $150 to be paid by your group. This fee includes instructor time for advance preparation as well as course set-up and take-down. Longer rodeos — up to a full day — can be booked for an additional fee. Please note that for some larger-scale events, two instructors may be required.
Additional resources may be required. Volunteers will be required to run registrations, helmet/bike checks andskills stations. Depending on the number of participants, bicycle rodeos can be large complex events requiring significant manpower. At large events, with the necessary additional support, our instructors can organize and oversee skills stations, but will need support from volunteers within your organization to ensure a successful event. A good rule of thumb when estimating the number of volunteers required, you should anticipate providing 1 volunteer for every 5 participating children. Additionally, for groups larger than 20, you should contact a local bike shop to see if they will sponsor your event by providing a mechanic (or two) to assist with any necessary bicycle repairs. Bikes that are not in good working condition are not safe and will not be allowed on the courses. Additionally, signed releases will be required for all participants.
